Stay Healthy this Season

Stay Healthy this Season

To help prevent the spread of illness during cold and flu season, which typically begins in October and peaks in February, please remember to follow these precautions:

• Get a flu shot. The Shaker Heights Health Department offers flu vaccine for children and adults now through December. Call (216) 491-1480 for an appointment. The cost is $12 for children 6 months to 18 years old, and $30 for adults. Flu shots are also available without an appointment at most pharmacies, such as Walgreens and CVS, and may be free of charge, depending on your insurance plan.

• Wash hands frequently, using soap and hot water, for at least 20 seconds (about the time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song.) Alcohol-based hand sanitizer also works well.

• Cover your cough or sneeze using a tissue if possible; if not, cough or sneeze into the elbow or upper sleeve. Teach kids not to cough or sneeze into their hands.

• The signs and symptoms of flu can include: fever/chills, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, runny or stuffy nose, vomiting, or diarrhea. Students with these symptoms should stay at home until the symptoms have subsided.

• Students who have a fever of 100 degrees or more should stay home at least 24 hours after the fever is gone without use of medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin). Never give children aspirin, as it places them at high risk for medical complications.

• If a student becomes ill during school hours, parents will be contacted according to the information contained on the student’s emergency information cards. Therefore, It is extremely important that you notify the Registration Office of any changes in phone numbers during the course of the year, at (216) 295-4321 or by e-mail.
