Board Approves Modifications to 2014-15 School Calendar

The Board of Education has approved modifications to the 2014-15 school calendar. The changes:

• designate more professional days so that teachers can engage in professional learning on days when students are not in school. This will reduce the amount of time substitutes are teaching classes.

• reflect changes in state law requiring a minimum number of hours of instruction during the school year, rather than a minimum number of days.

• accommodate changes in the state testing schedule.

• move the first day of school for students from Monday, August 25, to Tuesday, August 26.

• shorten spring break from 8 days to 6.

• move Commencement from June 11 to June 9.

Families are encouraged to review the new calendar dates thoroughly. Download a copy here.

The calendar was recommended to the Board by a committee consisting of PTO representatives and other parents, the teachers’ association president and other staff members, principals, and central office administrators.

The administration and teachers’ association are also working on ways to make evening parent-teacher conferences more readily available for working parents.

In addition, the District is exploring partnerships with community partners and cultural organizations to provide enrichment activities for students on days when school is not in session.
