Shaker Heights Middle School Student Wins First Place in International Violin Competition

April 29, 2008 - After a week of musical performances, Shaker Heights Middle School student Chad Hoopes won first prize in an international violin competition, triumphing over nineteen other competitors from Poland, Canada, South Korea, China, Norway, Japan, Taiwan, Switzerland, and Russia.

Chad, a seventh-grade student, competed in the junior section of the Menuhin Competition held in Cardiff, Wales, from April 11 through April 20. The Menuhin Competition is one of the few international violin competitions for young musicians under the age of 22. The juried event is open to participants all of nationalities and comprises two age groups: Juniors (up to 15 years of age) and Seniors (16 to 21 years of age.) The contest, which was founded by the late violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin, has been in existence for more than 20 years.
