February 27 , 2007—Shaker Heights Middle School’s Junior Model United Nations Club excelled in several areas at the Junior Ohio Model United Nations competition in Columbus the weekend of February 17 and 18.
Team Ethiopia won an Outstanding Resolution Award for their paper on cleaning up landmines in civilian areas. Only ten of these awards were given, with 118 resolutions considered. Sebastian Wocial was the principal author and speaker with contributions from Sara Pink, Jake Scholl, Kari Semel, Tyler Tevis, and Jenny Heyside. Sara Pink also received an Outstanding Leadership Award.
Isabella McKnight of Team Belgium won an Outstanding Delegate Award for her preparation and public speaking during committee meetings and on the floor of the General Assembly. Dana Finley of Team Belgium won a runner-up award in the Peace Essay Contest for her work on gender discrimination. Sabrina Hervey and Olivia Pek also represented Team Belgium and helped write a resolution on language barriers in Western Europe.
Gabe Gordon of Team Thailand won the first-place award in the World Citizenship Essay Contest for his work on what it means to be a global citizen during such natural disasters as Hurricane Katrina. Austin Murray, Hannah Carlson, and Lizzie Stotter also represented Team Thailand and co-wrote a resolution on Muslim separatists and violence against Buddhists in Southeast Asia.
Spencer Seballos, Colin Sweeney, Nia Morgan, Kristofer Jackson, Abby Sheeran, and Hannah Niedermaier represented Team Maldives and wrote a resolution on global warming reforms.
Logan Davis, Grace Gerhart, Marissa Miller, Caroline Hatch, Markie Anderle, and Grace Finley represented Team Marshall Islands and wrote a resolution on preventing teenage pregnancy in underdeveloped countries.
Social studies teacher Michael Sears is the club’s sponsor.
