September 28, 2005--One hundred years ago, Albert Einstein wrote his legendary articles that provided the basis of three fundamental fields of physics: the theory of relativity, quantum theory, and the theory of Brownian motion. This year, The World Year of Physics celebrates the 100th anniversary of Einstein’s groundbreaking work while raising public awareness of physics.

As part of the celebration, Shaker Heights High School physics teachers will present An Evening of Physics on Friday, October 14. The program includes a public reception at 7:30 pm, a physics show at 8:00 pm, and a lecture, titled “How Do You Explain Einstein?” by physicist John S. Rigden at 8:30 pm.

Rigden is currently an Adjunct Professor of Physics at Washington University in St. Louis. He received his PhD from The Johns Hopkins University, holds an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Denison University, and was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University. He has served on the faculties of Eastern Nazarene College, Middlebury College, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and was also Director of Physics at the American Institute of Physics. Rigden has authored Physics and the Sounds of Music; Rabi: Scientist and Citizen; and Hydrogen: The Essential Element. He was editor of the American Journal of Physics from 1975 to 1985.
