Shaker Senior Earns Prestigious Cutler Scholarship

November 30, 2005—Shaker Heights High School senior Emily Grannis has earned the 2006-07 Jeanette Grasselli Brown-Manasseh Cutler Scholars Award from Ohio University (OU). This full, four-year scholarship provides tuition and room and board plus stipends to cover structured summer internships and study or work abroad.

The daughter of Alan and Nancy Grannis, Emily was one of eleven students selected this year to receive a Manasseh Cutler Scholarship.

“Cutler Scholars are serious students who exhibit moral strength of character; they are students with the energy and drive to be deeply involved in activities in their schools and communities,” said Charles J. Ping, Ohio University president emeritus and co-director of the Manasseh Cutler Scholars Program.

Students selected for this merit scholarship program must excel both in the classroom and at extracurricular activities. In addition to an excellent scholastic record, a student also must show evidence of personal integrity, a breadth of involvement and achievement, physical stamina, and the ability to lead and encourage others.

Emily, a National Merit Commended Student and AP Scholar, is an editor-in-chief of The Shakerite, Shaker Heights High School’s student newspaper. She has been a member of the women’s softball team, foreign language club, and earned high honors on the National Spanish Exam. In 2004, she earned an evaluation of “excellent” at the Northeast Ohio Scholastic Press Association Press Day contest in the Sports Feature category.

The Manasseh Cutler Scholarship program, which emphasizes development of leadership potential, was established in 1994 and named for one of OU’s founders. Dr. Jeanette Grasselli Brown, a native of Cleveland and a graduate of the university, served as an OU trustee and as a member of the OU Foundation Board of Trustees. She and her husband Glenn Brown established the Jeanette Grasselli Brown-Manasseh Cutler Scholars Award to be given to a graduate of a selected group of Northeast Ohio high schools, including Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, Solon, Orange, and Chagrin Falls.
