June 2, 2005– The Shaker Heights City School District has named two new elementary principals, effective July 1.
Both are filling vacancies created by retirements.

Christopher Hayward (top) will be the new principal at Fernway Elementary School, and Colleen Longo (bottom) will be the principal at Boulevard Elementary School.

Hayward joined the Shaker faculty in 1994 as a first-grade teacher at Onaway Elementary School and served as staff assistant at Onaway and Boulevard from 1999 to 2002. He was promoted to assistant principal at Woodbury Elementary in 2002. Hayward holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Ohio University and a master’s in administration and supervision from John Carroll University, and is working toward a superintendent’s license at Ashland University. He and his wife, Kristina, are Shaker Heights residents.

Hayward has been a member of the District technology team and has published and presented in the areas of early literacy, student assessment, and faculty development. “He is an experienced and creative educator who will serve Fernway’s children well,” said Bernice Stokes, Executive Director of Elementary Education. Hayward replaces George Cannon, who retires this
summer after 38 years in education, including 23 years in Shaker Heights.

Longo comes to Shaker Heights from the Mentor school district, where she has been a classroom teacher, language arts specialist and elementary principal. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Miami University, a master’s in education from Ashland University, and a master’s in organizational development from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. She is pursuing further study in school administration at Cleveland State University and has taught at both John Carroll University and Ashland University. She lives in Shaker Heights with her husband, Charles.

“Ms. Longo has a strong record as an instructional leader,” Stokes said. “I am delighted that she is joining the Shaker staff and I look forward to introducing her to the Boulevard community.” Longo replaces Rebecca Kimberly, who retired on December 31, 2004, after more than 17 years at Boulevard. Retired administrator John Addison has served as interim principal at Boulevard since January.
