George Cannon, Principal of Fernway School, has announced his retirement at the end of this school year. Cannon joined the District's faculty 23 years ago and served as elementary science specialist before becoming principal at Fernway.
Both internal and external candidates are being considered for the position.
Following is a letter sent by Cannon to families of Fernway students.
April 6, 2005
Dear Fernway Families:
After a great deal of consideration, I have decided to retire as Fernway principal at the end of this school year. My 38 years in education, including 23 years in Shaker, have been personally and professionally gratifying. It has been a wonderful experience working in what I consider to be one of the finest school districts in the United States.
I want to thank all of you for your tremendous support of our school and the children we serve. I am confident that Fernway will continue to thrive because of its outstanding staff and strong sense of community.
My family plans to remain in Shaker Heights, so I will continue to be part of this extraordinary community. I wish all of you well and look forward to seeing Fernway’s children grow and excel.
With warmest wishes,

George Cannon
