April 29, 2005—Shaker Heights High School senior Emma Lawrence has won a Morehead Scholarship to the University of North Carolina. The award covers all expenses for four years of undergraduate study and includes a stipend to cover summer internships and travel abroad.
Emma, a National Merit Commended Student and gold and silver medalist in the National Latin Exam, is also founder and co-president of the International Volunteering Club, which took her to Costa Rica to work with children at a special school for the disabled and deaf. She has played clarinet with Shaker’s symphonic band and concert winds and served as squad leader of the marching band for three years. She has also been a member of the Junior Council on World Affairs, Student Group on Race Relations and women’s varsity field hockey team. The daughter of Charles Lawrence and Debra Lawrence, she has attended the Shaker Schools since kindergarten.
The John Motley Morehead Foundation awards undergraduate scholarships designed to attract outstanding, well-rounded students to study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The presence of these Morehead Scholars is intended to enhance the excellence of the University through the Scholars’ contributions to campus activities and classroom study. Morehead Awards, closely patterned after Rhodes Scholarships, are based solely on merit. About 40 students from the United States, United Kingdom and Canada are offered the scholarship each year after a rigorous selection process.
Emma is the fourth Shaker student to win a Morehead Scholarship in recent years; Jonathan Slain ('00), Carolyn Shook (’99) and Brad Picot (’98) were also Morehead Scholars.
