May 11 , 2005—Two teams of Shaker Heights High School students earned top scores on the Test of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS). Shaker Team A ranked first locally and statewide and fifteenth nationally, while Team B placed third locally, fifth statewide and thirty-eighth nationally in their division. About 1,400 teams from across the country competed.

The rigorous examination, sponsored by the Junior Engineering and Technical Society (JETS), gives students the opportunity to reflect critically on real-world engineering issues and to learn team development skills. This year’s test included questions on irrigation water-lifting systems, friction force measurements with strain gages, compressor applications in manufacturing, solar measurements from earthly positions, orbital mechanics, nanotechnology processes, roadway design and nuclear engineering.

The students whose insight into this year's topics laid out the blueprint for their success were, on Team A, Andre Dev (’05), David Frisof (’05), Eric Kramer (’05), Adam Margolius (’05), Nayyir Qutubuddin (’06), Lee Reis (’05), Carolyn Troha (’05) and Jing Wang (’05); and on Team B, Michael Abramczyk (’06), Brian Gamm (’05), Sean Muron (’05), Ben Sattin (’05) and Alexandra Wang (’05).

The TEAMS examination is given in two parts, the first of which consists of a series of objective multiple-choice questions related to various engineering situations. The second part of the test requires students to describe and defend their solutions to open-ended, subjective questions related to problems from the first part of the examination. Answers from the first part of the test are used to determine state rankings, while the results of the second portion of the examination determine national ranking.
