March 23, 2005— Fernway Elementary School’s chess team was awarded high honors at the 2005 Ohio Elementary Chess Championships on March 19, with a team first place and outstanding individual performances.
Team members competing in the K-3 Primary Championship Division earned a first-place ranking. First-grade student Benjamin Robertson and third-grade student Zane Eisen led the team to victory with their fifth- and eighth-place rankings respectively. Second-grade student Peter Evans and third-grade students Kenny Dixon, Leo Izen and Anno Van Den Akker also contributed wins that helped make the victory possible.
In the K-6 Reserve Division, fourth-grade students Eric Sterin and Isabel Robertson turned in solid performances. Kindergartners Zachary Brown and Wyatt Eisen, first-grade students Royce Johnson and Robert Desmond and second-grade student Ana Ioachmescu showed off their competitive spirit in the K-3 Novice Division. Wyatt Eisen ranked seventh in the division.
