Shaker Students Earn Top Honors in Congressional
Arts Competition
May 7, 2004 - Shaker Heights High
School senior Selena Simmons-Duffin was named
this year's grand prizewinner of the Congressional Arts Competition
for the 11th District of Ohio. Selena's winning entry, entitled
“Night Lamp,” won her a scholarship to the Savannah College of Art
and Design and earned her an invitation to attend the national awards
ceremony in Washington, D.C. The entry was also awarded first place
in the competition's Drawing category.
Two works created by Jessamyn Davis , “Dying Romanticism”
and “Apples—Noon and Dark,” earned first and third place in the
Painting category. Joshua Kaplan's painting “Light
in Shadow” was awarded second place in the same category. Jessamyn
and Joshua are also seniors at the High School.
Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones honored the competition's winners
at a ceremony held on May 1 at the Martin Luther King Library. Winners
will also have their artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol.
The Congressional Arts Competition provides a forum for demonstrating
the importance that the arts play in American society and gives
students in grades 9 through 12 an opportunity to display their
artistic skills.
In addition to being this year's grand prizewinner of the Congressional
Arts Competition, two of Selena's works are included in the 34th
Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition, on display in Columbus from
April 18 through May 20. Over 12,000 art entries were submitted
by 9th through 12th grade students throughout Ohio; 300 were chosen
for the exhibit. A student in Daniel Whitely's
AP Art Portfolio class, Selena submitted a larger-than-life self-portrait
in oil, entitled “Obits,” as well as a sculpture parody of “American
Gothic” that was made of car steering columns. She plans to attend
Stanford University next year.
