June 3 , 2005—Shaker Heights High School senior Benjamin Wolpaw has been awarded a Robert C. Byrd Scholarship for his outstanding academic achievement. Byrd Scholars receive $1,500 a year for up to four years to help cover the cost of their undergraduate college studies. Benjamin plans to attend Brown University.

The son of Daniel and Terry Wolpaw, Benjamin has attended the Shaker Schools since kindergarten. During his time at Shaker Heights High School, he was a National Merit Scholar, an AP Scholar, an award winner in the 2004 National History Day contest, and a member of the tennis and track and field teams.

U.S. Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia secured the creation and continuation of this scholarship program as part of a national plan to offer monetary awards to students who display excellent academic skills throughout high school and demonstrate the possibility for continued educational success in college. Byrd Scholars are selected based on their grade point average, class rank, ACT or SAT composite scores, and other school and community-based leadership activities.
