Accident Claims Student Jenny Goldman’s Life

Following is a message sent by Superintendent of Schools Mark Freeman to staff members of the Shaker Heights City School District on Sunday, January 11, 2004.

I am deeply saddened to report the death of Jenny Goldman, a junior at Shaker Heights High School, in an automobile accident on Saturday evening. Our hearts go out to Jenny’s family, which includes a sister, Amanda, who is an eighth-grader at Shaker Heights Middle School.

Four other Shaker students were in the car with Jenny but are not believed to have sustained life-threatening injuries. They are Nicholas Agich (grade 12), Alexander Anderson (12), Andrew Hopkins (12), and Addy Neilson (12).

Details of the accident are not completely known at this time. According to the information available as of Sunday morning, the single-car accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday on eastbound Shaker Boulevard east of Sulgrave Road. Beachwood police responded. According to police, there is no evidence that alcohol or drugs were involved.

This tragic accident will have a wide impact on the School District and community. Most directly affected will be the High School. We will have additional counseling available to students at the High School beginning on Monday, in accordance with the procedures outlined in our Critical Events Manual.

We will also take steps to support the siblings of those involved in the accident. As mentioned above, Jenny’s sister, Amanda, is a student at the Middle School. Andrew has two siblings in Shaker schools: Kelsey, a 9th grader at the High School, and Zachary, a 6th grader at Woodbury. Addy Neilson has an older brother, Benjamin, who graduated in 2000. Undoubtedly there will be many students at various grade levels with family, school, or neighborhood connections to one or more of the young people involved in the accident. I ask the staff to be alert to any student, at any grade level, who might be in need of support.

We will keep the staff apprised of additional information as it becomes available. Let us join together to support our students, families, and one another at this very sad time.
