83 Shaker Students Named AP Scholars
Eighty-three Shaker students and June 2002 graduates have been named AP Scholars by The College Board in recognition of their outstanding performance on national Advanced Placement (AP) examinations. AP exams are grades on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest. Most U.S. colleges grant credit or upper-level placement for a grade of 3 or higher.
Shaker Heights High School offers 17 Advanced Placement courses. In any given year, approximately one-third of Shaker sophomores, juniors, and seniors are enrolled in at least one AP course. In May 2002, 294 Shaker sophomores, juniors and seniors took 665 AP exams, with 88 percent earning a score of 3 or higher. The students honored graduated in June 2002 unless otherwise noted.
Thirty-three students were named AP Scholars by completing three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher. They are Angelo Ajayi, Michael Bass, Edward Ceaser (Class of 2003), Camilla Cullis (’03), Katherine Dubyak (’03), Margaret Elliott, Faye Gleisser, Laura Goldberg, Owen Hearey (’04), Matthew Immerman (’03), Jeremy Katz, Jonathan Kent, Ilya Kogan (’03), Alison Koler, Zachary Kramer, Lauren Licina, Merrill Maguda (’03), Seth Malone, Laura Mankowski, Joseph McFarlane (’03), Kelly Murphy, Jessica Nitchmann, Andrew Persons, Matt Ratner, Margaret Richards, Gabrielle Scherzer, Lindsey Schilling, Mark Skerry (’03), Whitney Smith, Lee Steinbock, Joseph Tartakoff (’03), Sarah Wang (’03), and Lydia Watts.
Fifteen students qualified as AP Scholars with Honor by earning an average of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more exams. They are Todd Angney, Emily Bonem, Johanna Craig, Mary Griffith, Marissa Grossman, Lisa Hochman, Andrew Kaplan, Michael Koch, Stephen Morrical, Katherine Nielson, Mary O’Connell, Tristan Ribar, Duncan Sanford, Allison Waithe, and Melissa Woods.
Thirty-five students qualified as AP Scholars with Distinction by earning an average of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on at least five exams. They are Laura Barnes, Edward Cormany (’03), Julia Cooperman, Claire Dietrich, Lesley DiFransico, Patrick Duffy, Gretchen Fuller (’03), Joseph Fungsang, Kevin Gallagher, Jeffrey Giertz, John Goheen, Nathan Hsu, Taina Immonen, Elliott Karr, Leah Kaufman, Alexander Madorsky, Alexandra Marcotty, David Margolius, Whitney Meredith, Catherine Nosse, Seth Rosenberg, Aaron Saks, Karen Schaefer, Amy Schiller, Antonio Senagore, Michael Shenk, J. R. Siegel, David Simmons-Duffin, Matthew Smith, Sarah Spiegler, Henry Trier, Roopa Vasudevan, Amanda Webb, Carolyn Wilson, and James Wrenn.
David Simmons-Duffin was named an AP National Scholar, a designation reserved for students earning an average grade of 4 or higher on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on at least eight exams. Simmons-Duffin, now a student at Harvard University, took 13 AP exams, earning eleven 5’s and two 4’s, for an average of 4.81.
