36 Seniors Honored in National Merit & Achievement Programs
Thirty-six members of the Shaker Heights High School Class of 2003 were honored in the National Merit, National Achievement and National Hispanic Scholarship programs – more honorees than any other public high school in Northeast Ohio.
The students were selected on the basis of their scores on last year’s Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test, which also serves as the National Merit Scholar Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
The National Merit Semifinalists are Amy Broadbent, Jennifer Broadbent, Abigail Cahill, René Chelune, Edward Cormany, Stephanie Jacobs, Noreen Malone, Joseph McFarlane, Emily Pfaff, Hans Rinderknecht, Brian Sutorius, and Sarah Wang. Shaker student Mark Vieyra also qualified as a National Merit Semifinalist but he is a member of the Class of 2004.
These are among 16,000 semifinalists designated from some 1.2 million students who took the test in the fall of 2001.
The National Achievement Semifinalists are Stephanie Jacobs (also a National Merit Semifinalist) and Nathaniel Moore. The National Achievement program honors the nation’s top African American scholars.
Two Shaker students were honored in the National Hispanic Recognition program this year. They are Carlos Piepenburg and Joseph Tartakoff (also a National Merit Commended student). This program honors the nation’s top Hispanic students.
The National Merit Commended students are William Benish, William Bostwick, Elizabeth Campbell, Katherine Dubyak, Amanda Duca, Gretchen Fuller, Jeffrey Greenwald, Matthew Immerman, Phillip Kantor, Sara Reichstein, Jenny Ronis, Andrew Smith, Joseph Tartakoff, Jeffrey Waldman, Elise Weinberger, Katherine Whitney and Rebecca Wolff.
The National Achievement Commended students are Kesi Brock, Bruno Green, Alexandra Gregg-Zellars, Matthew Robertson and Blair Scott.
