SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Shaker Heights High School Mathematics League ranks first in Ohio and 37th in the nation in team competition at the 2002 American Mathematics Contest (AMC).
In individual competition at the 12th grade level AMC-1 2B contest, senior David Simmons-Duffin, freshman Adam Margolius, senior Matthew Smith, and sophomore Yutaro Komuro rank 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 14th, respectively, among 1613 Ohio students.

The top 5% of AMC students advance to the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), a three-hour, 15-question examination. The top 25 male and top 25 female AIME students receive $1000 college scholarships.
This year fifteen Shaker students qualify for the AIME: Samuel Freilich, Jeffrey Greenwald, Owen Hearey, Arlo Hill, Matthew Immerman, Yutaro Komuro, Hyun Young Lee, Adam Margolius, Katherine Nielson, David Pretzer, Hans Rinderknecht, David Simmons-Duffin, Matthew Smith, Jonathan Strassfeld and Henry Trier. Based on their exceptionally high AMC and AIME scores, SHHS freshman Adam Margolius and SHHS senior David Simmons-Duffin are among the 300 students in the nation selected to compete at the United States Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO), a two day, nine hour, six question essay-proof examination. The top USAMO students will represent the United States at the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland this summer.
