Shaker Teacher Tom Patrick Wins Siemens Award
for Advanced Placement
SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio – Thomas Patrick, an Advanced Placement Calculus teacher at Shaker Heights High School, has received a 2002 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement in recognition of his exemplary teaching and dedication to his students and Advanced Placement Calculus. Patrick will receive a cash award of $1,000 and a plaque and will be honored at a gala dinner ceremony on November 22, at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
“Our mission at the Siemens Foundation is to enhance math and science education in America’s high schools,” said Albert Hoser, Chairman and CEO of the Siemens Foundation, the New Jersey-based not-for-profit corporation that sponsors the awards. “To achieve this goal we believe it is vital to support educators who encourage students to pursue these fields of study. With more students following a math and science track we hope to widen the pool of technology talent we will need for continued economic growth in the United States.”
Selections for the awards are made by the Foundation’s partner, the College Board. Each year the Siemens Foundation honors 18 full-time high school math and science teachers with this highly coveted award. Twelve teachers, two in each of the College Board’s six regions, are selected for their commitment to students and the AP Program. Six additional teachers, one in each region, are recognized from schools that have a substantial under-represented minority student population. The six College Board regions include: New England, Middle States, South, Midwest, Southwest and West.
Now in their fifth year, the Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement include scholarships for 24 students, 18 teachers and 12 schools.
Established in 1998 to promote and support educational activities, the Siemens Foundation recognizes America’s most promising science and mathematics students, as well as educators and schools that are doing the most to promote education in the core sciences. The Foundation’s mission is based on the culture of innovation, research and educational support that is a hallmark of Siemens’ U.S. operating companies and its parent company, Siemens AG.
