Middle School Homework Center to Open

A Homework Center will open three afternoons per week at Shaker Heights Middle School, beginning on Tuesday, December 12. The center will include three classrooms – including a computer classroom – and will be staffed by the Middle School teachers from 4:00 p.m. until 5:20 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Students will be provided bus transportation home.

The purpose of the Homework Center is to give students an opportunity to complete their homework assignments in school, with adult supervision and assistance available.

“There is ample research that tells us that a direct relationship exists between student performance in school and how thoroughly homework is completed,” said Neil T. Glazer, principal of the Middle School. “We are asking parents to join us in our initiative by insisting that homework be completed each and every day. Checking your child’s homework and encouraging use of the Homework Center are good strategies for helping children achieve and learn.”

A new mathematics computer classroom will be used for the Homework Center. This will provide students with the opportunity to use the computers for a variety of educational uses. The computers are a part of the School District’s network system and include access to the Internet and all other online services.

Middle School students may, if they wish, also take advantage of the District’s secondary tutoring center at Shaker Heights High School, which is open from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
