Rosemary Weltman Named Principal of Woodbury Elementary School

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio (May 16, 2000) – Rosemary Weltman, an elementary school administrator with more than 20 years’ experience in Shaker Heights and other districts, has been named principal of Woodbury Elementary School. She will be in her new position as the 2000-2001 school year opens.

“Dr. Weltman is a proven leader in Shaker Heights,” said Mark Freeman, Superintendent of Schools. “She was an outstanding principal at Onaway, providing strong instructional leadership and a nurturing environment for children. She has done a superb job for the past three years in her role as assistant to the superintendent. As sorry as I am to lose her from the central office staff, I was delighted when she expressed an interest in the principalship at Woodbury.”

Weltman began her career in 1972 as an elementary special education teacher in the neighboring Cleveland Heights-University Heights school district. She taught fifth grade and served as curriculum coordinator in the Heights schools, then became an elementary assistant in the Euclid schools. She returned to the Heights schools in 1981 as principal of Roxboro Elementary (K-6), then spent three years as principal of Mackay Elementary School (K-6) in Tenafly, NJ. In 1991, she was named principal of Onaway Elementary School (K-4) in Shaker Heights.

Since 1997, Weltman has served in Shaker as Assistant to the Superintendent, with responsibility for the Shaker Schools Foundation; policy development; and management of state, federal, and private grants. She created and directs the District’s first Leadership Academy for administrators and prospective administrators, and has been the District’s staff liaison for joint collaborative initiatives with the City of Shaker Heights and the Shaker Heights Public Library.

“I have enjoyed and learned from my three years as assistant to the superintendent, but I missed working directly with teachers and students, where I believe I can make the greatest impact,” Weltman said. “Fifth and sixth grade is an exciting and critical period in children’s development.

“I look forward to the joys and challenges of being a principal once again, and I look forward to working with the talented faculty and staff at Woodbury.”

Weltman will succeed Delores Groves, who announced her impending retirement in March after 30 years of distinguished service in Shaker.

Weltman earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Cleveland State University, a master’s in special education from Kent State University, and a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Akron, where she wrote a dissertation on transformational leadership in schools. She has made presentations to professional organizations on running a public school foundation and student assessment.

Woodbury, constructed in 1918 as the original high school in Shaker Heights, became an upper elementary school in the late 1980s. It currently serves approximately 900 students in grades 5 and 6 from throughout the School District.
