Fernway Teacher Wins Ohio Arts Award

A Shaker Heights teacher has been awarded a $5,000 prize by The Ohio Arts Council for three short stories she wrote.

Jean Reinhold, academic resource program teacher at Fernway Elementary School, was one of 11 Ohio writers recognized for excellence in fiction writing this year.

“When I received the letter of verification, I was so excited because it was validation for something that I’ve worked hard on and, more importantly, something that I love doing,” Reinhold said. “I very much appreciate the support from the Ohio Arts Council.”

Fernway Principal George Cannon said, “Having Jean Reinhold as part of your staff is like having an artist-in-residence with you all the time to share with you not only those things that she does on her own, but those things that she does with children.”

As academic resource program teacher, Reinhold teaches enrichment classes to all third and fourth graders. She has created lessons on a broad range of topics including Greek Mythology, architecture, poetry and flight.

Reinhold, a Shaker Heights resident, also started the peer mediation program at Fernway which last year won the Ohio Martin Luther King Jr. Award for Youth Leadership.
