Shaker Dominates History Day Competition

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio, April 7, 1999 – Students from Shaker Heights High School won three first-place awards, two seconds, and a third at the district competition for National History Day.

In the Individual Project category, freshman Lindsay Kocab continued her History Day winning streak with the first-place award for “Rosie the Riveter: Women at Work in World War II.” The entry also won an award from the Case Western Reserve University History Department for best overall entry, and will advance to the state competition. Kocab was a district and state first-place winner last year as an eighth-grader at Shaker Middle School. Her current social studies teacher is Sarah Davis, a 1990 Shaker graduate.

Shaker took the top two places in the Research Paper category. Joy Nims captured first for “The Atomic Decision,” and Alder Brannin was awarded second place for “Tears, Trails, and Train Tracks.” Both are juniors currently taught by department head Timothy Mitchell. They qualified for state competition.

Junior Aaron Dibner-Dunlap, also a student of Mitchell’s, won first in the Individual Performance competition for his project, “Any Color: How One Car Caused a Product Revolution.” He will advance to state competition. In Group Media, juniors Hyo Bae and Allison Pollack won third place for “TV and Its Effect on Presidential Campaigns.” Bae and Pollack are also Mitchell’s history students.
