Shaker Senior Earns Prestigious Cutler Scholarship
SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio, March 16, 1999 – Shaker Heights High School senior Patricia Bell has won a full, four-year scholarship to Ohio University (OU).
Bell, daughter of Carol E. and Rick A. Bell, was one of eight students – seven from Ohio and one from Pennsylvania – to be awarded a Manasseh Cutler Scholarship. She will attend OU in Athens in the fall.
The Manasseh Cutler Scholarship, a merit scholarship program, was established in 1994 and named for one of OU’s founders. The program is modeled on the Morehead Scholars program at the University of North Carolina and the Rhodes Scholars at Oxford University. Like the Morehead and Rhodes scholarships, the Cutler program emphasizes development of leadership potential, according to the University. The scholarship provides full tuition, room and board; is renewable for four years; and includes a stipend to cover structured summer internships and travel.
“To be considered as a Cutler Scholar, the young person must be a serious student who exhibits a moral strength of character and translates personal values into scholastic pursuits and community involvement,” says Charles J. Ping, Ohio University president emeritus and executive director of the Manasseh Cutler Scholars Program.
Bell has played both soccer and lacrosse on Shaker teams, has been a member of the High School band, and was active in the school’s foreign exchange programs. She spent the fall semester of her junior year in Russia, and her family has hosted exchange students from France, Brazil, Russia, and Germany. Bell plans to study engineering at Ohio University and hopes to combine it with her interests in foreign languages and travel.
“I’m getting really excited about it,” said Bell. “Not many people get this type of opportunity. It will be nice for me to use the leadership skills that I already have and develop them so I can achieve what I want in life.”
Bell’s parents are equally thrilled. “We’ve always been proud of Patty, and we’re excited that other people see what we see in her,” said Carol Bell. “This is more than just school and tuition, it’s a real leadership program.”
As a Cutler Scholar, Bell will participate in an Outward Bound outdoor leadership program this summer, community service work next summer, some type of business work experience the following summer, and study abroad during her senior year. She will also participate in a series of colloquia with her fellow Cutler scholars from all four graduating classes.
Jeanette Grasselli Brown, a former vice president of research for Standard Oil and a 1950 graduate of Ohio University, is the benefactor who sponsored Bell’s scholarship. Grasselli Brown designated five Northeast Ohio high schools - Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, Solon, Orange and Chagrin Falls – as eligible to nominate students for Cutler scholarships funded by her endowment. She is one of 11 sponsors who have endowed Cutler scholarships across the state.
Grasselli Brown has devoted much of her volunteer activity to education. A former trustee of OU, she is currently a member of the Ohio Board of Regents and is chair of the board of trustees of Cleveland Scholarship Programs Inc., a privately funded organization that helps students in the Cleveland area find financial aid for college.
Founded in 1804, Ohio University was the first university in the Northwest Territory and is the oldest university in the Midwest.
