We are all shocked and saddened by the shootings this afternoon at Success Tech Academy in Cleveland. At this writing, details are sketchy, but it is known that a student shot at least four people, including two adults and two students.

I spoke with Shaker Heights Police Chief Ugrinic this afternoon to review our relevant safety procedures. Our school security staff has instantaneous contact with the Police Department via radio, and the police are always responsive to the needs of the schools. Senior staff members from the District also speak frequently with the Chief and other City safety officials to plan and review strategies for keeping our students and staff members safe.

Shootings in schools are extremely rare, but we must all be vigilant about safety at all times. Security precautions are, of course, extremely important. It is equally important that any concerns about a student’s mental health or access to weapons be reported immediately to an administrator. Parents are urged to talk with their children about the need to report any behavior that causes concern.

Once again, we are reminded about the tragedy that can ensue when children have access to firearms. The School District is firmly committed to the safety of our students and staff. We are deeply appreciative of the support of the Shaker Heights Police Department and the community in this effort.
