February 8, 2008 — Elementary students in the Shaker Heights Schools celebrated the Chinese New Year this week, marking the holiday with assemblies and performances and learning about traditional Chinese foods and customs.

All first and second graders in the District are currently learning the basics of the Mandarin Chinese language and Chinese culture, with plans to expand the program to third graders next year. Liu Boahua and Yi Wen, both visiting from China under the auspices of the College Board and Hanban, are their teachers.

At the High School, two sections of Chinese I and a second-year class for students who studied Chinese I last year are being taught by Li Luling, another visiting instructor from China. Chinese III will be offered in the 2008-09 school year.
