June 1, 2007 – Sixty-nine Shaker Heights High School students and 57 Shaker Heights Middle School students received recognition for their outstanding performance on this year’s National Latin Exam, with junior Yue Qi receiving a perfect score. Several also earned awards in Greek and Mythology.

At the Middle School, Summa Cum Laude honors went to: Nathaniel Henry, Sabrina Hervey, Isaac Hoffman, Cora Jackson, Ellen Jackson, Leo Katz, Seamus Leahy, Kathy Lin, Emily Longman, Isabella McKnight, David Neary, Michael Pintauro, Miriam Rabinowitz, Heidi Reis, Gabriel Rothman, Jennifer Smith, and Lindsay White. Maxima Cum Laude awards went to: Alexis Archie, James Berick, Alyssa Binczyk, Ian Brody, Alexis Chambers, Adam Cohen, Christian Cottington, Brittany Feeling, Jennifer Heyside, Jacob Miller, Emily Paetz, Sarah Paetz, Haley Rayburn, Brendan Ryan, Walter Stamm, Tivon Sterin, Eric Super, Danielle Swales, Daniel Urban, Allyson Yoder, and Emma Weitzner. Magna Cum Laude honors went to: Hanna Catlett, Matthew Friedman, Clare Galletta, Kelly Heikkila, Diane Ryu, and Michael Wagner. Earning the rank of Cum Laude were: Nicole Blatchford, John Chaney, Taylor Clark, Kadeem Evans, Kendall Marbury, Austin Murray, Matthew Neary, John O'Halloran, Sara Pink, Christopher Sommers, Elizabeth Stotter, Joshua Tallman, and Michael Wood. Their Latin teacher is Jane Troha.

In addition, Shaker Heights High School students earned Blue and Green Ribbons (the equivalent of gold and bronze medals) for their high scores on the 24th National Greek Exam.

For their excellent results on the Beginning Attic Exam (Greek I), Michael Cowett earned a Blue Ribbon, and Abigail Pink and Kate Ryan received Green Ribbons.

For their high scores on the Intermediate Attic Exam (Greek II), Susanna Pretzer was awarded a Blue Ribbon, and Cyrus Taylor was the recipient of a Green Ribbon.

For their outstanding results on the Attic Greek Exam (Greek III), Stephanie Goldfarb and Florian Mockel earned Green Ribbons.

The students’ Greek teacher is Robert White.

Several Shaker students were also awarded high honors after completing the 2007 Medusa Mythology Exam, earning gold and bronze medals and the ranks of Corona Laurea (fourth place) and Corona Oliva (fifth place).

In the upper level competition for juniors and seniors, Kate Ryan was the recipient of a bronze medal, while Stephanie Goldfarb, Abigail Pink, and Max Rothman earned Corona Laurea and Patrick White earned Corona Oliva.

In the lower level competition for freshmen and sophomores, Melissa Freilich was awarded a gold medal, Pranjal Vachaspati received a bronze medal, and Samantha Goldfarb, Caitlin Muron, and Ariel Pruitt earned Corona Oliva.

Composed of 50 multiple choice questions, this year’s mythology exam included questions on the ancient works of Apollodorus, Homer, Ovid, and Vergil, and on such modern works as Edith Hamilton’s Mythology, Thomas Bullfinch’s The Age of Fable, and Pierre Grimal’s Dictionary of Classical Mythology.
