Goals of the Kindergarten Program

The Shaker Heights Kindergarten program is designed to:

  • Respond to the child as an individual and build upon his or her own strengths and talents;

  • Meet the child’s needs in the areas of physical, social, emotional, creative, and intellectual growth;

  • Help enhance the child’s self-esteem and positive feelings about being a lifelong learner;

  • Help the child to develop social skills through activities that promote cooperation, problem solving and play;

  • Offer rich language and literacy experiences that will help the child develop the skills necessary for success as a reader and writer;

  • Explore mathematics and science through hands-on activities;

  • Provide opportunities for the child to develop large and small-muscle skills;

  • Provide opportunities for the child to develop musical and artistic skills and appreciation;

  • Engage the child’s natural curiosity and help develop the child’s understanding of the world;

  • Help the child develop a sense of self-control and self-direction as a member of a learning community.
