State law requires children who are five years old on or before September 30 to attend a formal kindergarten program. Children who will be five years old between October 1 and January 1 may be evaluated by the district for early entrance at the request of the parent. Call the Department of Special Education at 295-4311 if you would like your child to be considered for early entrance.
In the Shaker Heights City School District, kindergarten is a full-day program beginning at 9:15 a.m. and ending at 3:25 p.m. Children bring lunch from home. Milk may be purchased at school.
Parents are notified by mail regarding the dates of kindergarten registration. This takes place in the spring prior to the child’s entrance into kindergarten in the fall. Please contact the Office of the Registrar at 295-4321 to find out how to enroll your child. Early registration helps insure a smooth transition into school.
Only residents of the Shaker Heights City School District are entitled to attend the schools. School district maps are available at the Administration Building, 15600 Parkland Drive. If you are unsure whether your child is eligible to attend the Shaker schools, the Registrar will be happy to answer your questions.
