High School Small Auditorium Naming Ceremony
September 9, 2006—The Small Auditorium at Shaker Heights High School was restored and enhanced with major support from gifts to the Shaker Schools Foundation. Built in 1931, the space was in great need of renovation and updating. With this project, the Small Auditorium has become an intimate space with the technology and capacity to adapt to large or small academic classes; allow videotaping of lessons and presentations; conform to multi-media formats; and enhance opportunities for interdisciplinary courses. The Small Auditorium reopened in November 2003.
Leadership donors to the campaign to restore the Small Auditorium were offered the opportunity to select a commemorative opportunity, so that their names will be associated with the Shaker Heights City Schools in perpetuity. The following were honored at the September 9, 2006, event.
The Richard Hemmelgarn Small Auditorium was named for a gift from Janice Hammond and Edward Hemmelgarn, in memory of his father (1914-1999).
The stage in the Hemmelgarn Small Auditorium was named for a gift from Marjorie Newman in honor of her husband, Arthur Newman (Shaker Class of 1961), and her sons, Robert (Shaker Class of 1998) and Jordan Klimek (Shaker Class of 2001).
The SMART Podium in the Hemmelgarn Small Auditorium was named for a gift from the Karr Family (Bernard and Nancy Karr).
