Dear Shaker Families,
Giving back to the community is a fundamental value in Shaker Heights – one that we emphasize in school through community, service and senior projects. In many of our schools, students and staff members have collected money, clothing, and food for those in need as far away as the Philippines and as nearby as our own community in Shaker Heights.
I hope that you will reinforce these values by spending some time as a family over winter break helping those in need. For our family, this will take the form of volunteering at the Cleveland Food Bank. There are many wonderful organizations that could use your help and will welcome your participation.
I also encourage you to spend some time participating in enriching family activities. We are extremely fortunate to have world-class cultural institutions right here in the Greater Cleveland area. Visit a local library; attend a play or concert; or experience great art and science at our wonderful museums. Also, continue reading to or with your children every day and be sure to monitor their social media activity. (View a list of books recommended by our school librarians.)
The world recently lost one of its most inspiring leaders with the passing of Nelson Mandela. Among his many memorable quotes was as follows:
A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.
I appreciate your partnership in helping all our students develop both their intellectual ability and their social conscience. And I wish all of you a restful and enjoyable winter break as well as a happy and productive new year.
Sincerely, Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr., Ed.D.
