PHILOSOPHY

The goal of the Foreign Language Department is to prepare students to communicate in and understand languages other than English, using both the spoken and the written word.  Through the study of foreign languages, students will understand the importance and meaning of culture.  Foreign language learning will enhance students’ knowledge of English, and reinforce and further their knowledge in other disciplines.  The study of foreign languages will prepare students to understand and appreciate diversity in language and culture, both locally and globally, and lead them to become responsible world citizens.

Foreign language courses are sequential and must be taken in the proper order.  The Foreign Language department head must approve any variations in the regular sequence to meet individual needs.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE EXPERIENCES BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Foreign Language students are afforded many opportunities to experience world languages and cultures through hosting international students and participating in exchange programs.  Students are invited to host students from Mexico, Germany, England, France and Japan.  Summer study trips chaperoned by Shaker teachers are offered for French, German, Spanish and Latin students.  The Spanish exchange program provides opportunities for students to appreciate another culture through its home stay experience with its sister school, the Universidad del Valle de Mexico in Mexico City.  The Shaker exchange with the Ratsgymnasium in Goslar allows students to spend a semester attending a college preparatory high school in Germany.  The American Field Service and many other national organizations offer additional international experiences for those interested in both semester and year-long programs abroad.
