Master Plan

How can our facilities best support the 21st Century educational needs of the Shaker student?

The answer: Ask a teacher about Educational Visioning.

The visioning process links this learning environment (curriculum, pedagogy and relationships) with facility design at the classroom, school building and District level.

Visioning is an exciting journey to deeply understand and rigorously define the 21st century teaching and learning environment before contemplating any facility modifications. This process allows the faculty, staff administration, students and community to share insights and explore ideas to better define our collective vision for the education of our students. The better we can define the learning environment for faculty, staff and students, the better we can renovate our facilities to support that need. In short, the Shaker approach to master planning is to define the schooling needs first and the building needs second.

This process will culminate with an educational plan that is based upon Shaker faculty input, research and proven strategies for brain-based learning from around the world to develop potential ways to renovate Shaker classrooms and facilities to more effectively support 21st century teaching and learning needs. The educational visioning process will provide the direction for the master plan for our school buildings. This is what we mean by “instruction drives facility planning.”

Our facilitator for the visioning process is BrainSpaces, Inc., an educational consulting firm that is internationally recognized for expertise in visioning, planning and design of high performance, 21st century teaching and learning environments.

All members of the Shaker community were invited to participate in this process. During the 2015 year, a series of workshops, surveys and community briefings will take place to gather information to define what the International Baccalaureate (IB) educational model means for our students.
