"Donor Pre-Centennial Concert Reception"
The Shaker Schools Foundation was pleased to be part of the District's first Centennial event. On February 15, the High School’s acclaimed music department paid tribute to the community’s 100-year history of supporting the arts and culture with a special Centennial concert featuring the Wind Ensemble, A Cappella Choirs, and Chamber Orchestra – all told, more than 220 student musicians. This rare opportunity to see all three groups perform together opened with a musical journey through the past century, with narration by WCLV’s Bill O’Connell, a Shaker parent. The repertoire ranged from Sousa and Copland to Simon & Garfunkel. Tom Deep directed the Wind Ensemble, Donna Jelen conducted the Chamber Orchestra, and Schneider conducted the choir selections. Video of several selections appears on the Shaker schools' YouTube Channel.
In addition to hosting a pre-concert reception for Annual Fund donors and School Board members, the Foundation funded a new work that received its world premiere at the concert. Thanks to the generosity of the Madeline and Dennis Block Fund of the Shaker Schools Foundation, David Conte was commissioned to write a piece for chorus and orchestra. "I Dream a World" uses the poetry of Langston Hughes to create the soundscape that celebrates the ideals of Shaker Heights and its public schools.
